AI & Machine Learning Are the Secret to a Powerful Email Defense

March 11, 2022

Have you made the most of AI and machine learning to bolster your company’s security? AI is a superstar in email security for a very good reason. AI-powered and automated email security is up to 40% more effective at spotting and stopping malicious messages like phishing email than a Secure Email Gateway (SEG) or conventional security.  That’s an amazing way that AI-powered automated email security gives your business an edge against cybercrime, providing a host of benefits like faster detection of phishing-related cyberattacks, better incident response capability and improved cyber resilience while saving your company money and reducing stress on your IT team. You’ll profit greatly from getting to know the power of AI in email security.

What is AI?

Artificial intelligence (AI) broadly refers to any human-like behavior displayed by a machine or system that enables it to perform a function or complete a task. In AI’s most basic form, computers are programmed to “mimic” human behavior using extensive data from past examples of similar behavior. AI enables computers to make decisions that allow them to act on their own without human input and take care of routine tasks like maintenance without human intervention.

What is AI’s Relationship to Automated Security?

AI is at the root of sophisticated and effective security automation solutions and it brings a host of benefits to the table. Security automation is the number one way to reduce a company’s attack surface. AI and security automation enabled organizations to respond to breaches nearly 30% faster than companies without security automation. Plus, companies that have chosen to invest in automation have a four-fold advantage in stopping a targeted cyberattack.

What is Machine Learning?

Machine learning (ML), which is sometimes used interchangeably with AI, refers to the process by which computers develop pattern recognition, or the ability to continuously learn from and make predictions based on data, then make adjustments without being specifically programmed to do so. Machine learning collects, organizes and structures data, ensuring that AI has the information that it needs to plug into its algorithm.

What is Machine Learning’s Relationship with AI?

Machine learning is based in algorithms that perform specific functions and are designed to require a range of human or computer supervision to complete tasks. Using machine learning, computers are able to make decisions about the data and ensure that accurate that it is relevant. AI removes a degree of human supervision from the analysis process by making specified choices without human help based on a pre-defined algorithm that uses machine learning to function. Machine learning ensures that the AI receives the right data at the right time.

What Are the Types of AI and What Makes Them Special?

Artificial intelligence is classified into two main categories: AI based on functionality and AI based on capabilities.

Explore Functionality-Based AI

There are four basic types of functionality-based AI:

Reactive machine – This AI has no memory power and lacks the ability to learn from past actions. IBM’s Deep Blue falls in this category.

Limited theory – With the addition of memory, this AI uses past information to make better decisions. Common applications like GPS location apps fall into this category.

Theory of mind – This AI is still being developed, with the goal of it having a very deep understanding of human minds.

Self-aware AI – This AI, which could understand and evoke human emotions as well as have its own, is still only hypothetical.

All About Capability-Based AI

This is the type of AI most often found in automated security solutions like AI-powered email security. There are four basic types of capability-based AI:

Artificial Narrow Intelligence (ANI) – A system that performs narrowly defined programmed tasks. This AI has a combination of reactive and limited memory. Most of today’s AI applications are in this category.

Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) – This AI is capable of training, learning, understanding and performing like a human.

Artificial Super Intelligence (ASI) – This type of AI performs tasks better than humans due to its superior data processing, memory and decision-making abilities. However, it is purely theoretical since no real-world examples exist today.

See Why AI is An Email Security Champion

Technology improvements are not exclusive to the good guys. Cybercriminals are constantly innovating to find new ways to exploit the weaknesses that businesses may have in their email security defenses — and every company has a few. Vulnerabilities IT teams can’t control, like human error, social engineering and employee negligence, present the bad guys with the openings that they need to strike.

Enter AI-powered security. This dynamo has changed the game. Why?

  • AI doesn’t have those human weaknesses. It’s never tired, distracted or burnt out. It is always at work and always learning. So, how does that apply to email security?
  • An AI-powered automated email security solution records the details of every email it scans.
  • The AI solution then uses the data to develop a profile of each employee’s typical patterns of communication.
  • The AI establishes a baseline of expected behavior to refer to when adjudicating incoming email traffic.
  • The algorithm then uses that profile when inspecting incoming messages.
  • Every incoming message is compared to that baseline using dozens of points of comparison.
  • If the AI spots a deviation from the norm, the algorithm will flag it for further investigation.
  • Suspicious messages may then be placed in quarantine to keep them away from employees until they can be reviewed by an IT team member.

AI-driven email security doesn’t wait for new threat intelligence to be uploaded by a tech to refine your protection, and it won’t quickly become obsolete like other email security technologies. Instead, the algorithm learns more about the company’s unique needs and patterns with every user interaction, providing a powerful defense against phishing that just becomes more and more effective over time.

Automation Includes Major Benefits

Companies that invest in AI and automation to secure things like email quickly find they’ve made a smart choice because those technologies come with a host of benefits for businesses of every size.

Cost savings

AI security gives you more protection without adding to your payroll. In fact, security automation and AI can save businesses more than 80% of the cost of manual security.

Improved cybersecurity posture

About 42% of companies in an IBM survey cited AI and security automation as a major factor in their success at improving their cybersecurity posture.

Greater cyber resilience

Almost a quarter of the companies in the IBM/Ponemon Cyber Resilient Organizations Survey cited adopting solutions that used AI and machine learning as crucial to improving their cyber resilience.
